The Fireplace and The Firehouse

So at the block party, when the fireman came, they told us that there would be an open house at the fire house the first weekend in October. I logged that away and was so glad I did because James had THE BEST time at the Wilmette Firehouse Open House! It was packed but so much fun. Just Mom and James went too - it was a very special day for both of us to spend some time together - just a really great day.

Before we left, a mason (yes a real mason) and his assistant were over at the house to rebuild our fireplace. We had chimney sweeps out to check out our fireplace because to us, it seemed like it was falling off the wall - the previous owners didn't use the fireplace ever (ever for 20 years!!!) and the house itself is over 100 years old. So.... we thought it would be prudent to get that checked out. So, we were right, the fireplace was falling off the wall and needed to be rebuilt. Enter the mason. Such a great nice Irish guy from the south side. Loved him. So James got to watch the fireplace be rebuilt and go to the open house at the firehouse. Here are the before and after shots:

Oh and to make this day even better, our cousins in New York sent us a shirt from their Dad's firehouse - Harlem-Hilton in the Bronx. James wore his shirt so proudly and every fireman at the open house smiled in such a way that I really can't describe - pride maybe? appreciation? I'm not exactly sure how to describe it but it made James realize he was a part of something really special. So thank you so much to Eileen and Mike.

Here are our photos from the big day.

And probably the most fun of the day - James getting ready for the obstacle course. He had so much fun. He also was able to convince the firemen to let him spray the hose twice. I don't think any other child did this.
