It's pretty funny to see how the city is shaping James. James gets to be exposed to a lot of things that other kids aren't exposed to and it became more obvious to me and Doug over the last few days when a few things happened. On Tuesday, we were walking to the grocery store and James yelled out, "Rope!" Sure enough, there were window washers hanging by ropes going down one side of a building and we just watched them for a while. A lot of people passed by and smiled and talked with us. They wanted to know if this was the first time he had seen them and I said no, they wash our windows this way but he usually sees them from inside our house with the blinds down so they look like shadows. This is much cooler. Other people just stayed to watch them with us. When one team finished James clapped for them and then waved hi.
James also loves pretending to drive the car. When we're hanging the bikes back up after a ride or cleaning the car, we let him sit in the driver's seat and turn the steering wheel. He beeps the horn a lot and says he's playing "Taxi" when he beeps the horn. If there's a horn being honked it's usually a taxi honking at another car or pedestrians. James will hear a horn when we're outside and just say to himself knowingly, "Taxi."
When we're walking around Old Town or driving up by Loyola, the L runs back and forth and James loves to watch it and drive under the underpasses. I asked him once, "James you like the trains a lot huh? Pretty cool stuff." And he said, "No Mom. L." Yep. James was right - it's not the train; it's the L.
