Nick

The building across the street from us, the building we watch, with the garbage trucks, the big loading dock area ... there's a maintenance guy that works for the building and we see him everytime the big garage door opens and closes.

This is one of big the reasons I'll be sad when the building goes up ... we won't be able to window gaze anymore.

Anyway, a few months ago, maybe May-ish, maybe June-ish, I was sitting with James in his room and we were watching the door go up, the truck go in and then the maintenance guy came out, stood outside for a bit and hungout and then went back in and shut the door. Half-joking I asked James, "What should we call him? What do you think that guy's name is?" And James actaully answered. He said, "Nick."

So ... fast forward a few months and Nick is a part of our everyday conversations. James even mimics the way Nick stands with his feet crossed, leaning on the wall with one hand. We say things like, "Hi Nick!" when we see him through the window. It's Nick's door. Nick's garbage. Recently it's gone further ... we were at Home Depot and James saw a big orange bucket and we needed one among other things so in the cart it went with the rest of our items. As soon as we got home, James put on his yellow smock, and started collecting 'garbage' for his orange garbage can. We asked him what he was doing and he said, "Nick Blah." And then he would pass by us and we'd say "Hi James" and he'd correct us and say, "No, Heyo Nick Blah." So James pretends to be Nick.   

So, where'd Nick come from? We honestly have no idea. We don't know anyone named Nick or Nicholas. The only thing I can think of is that James learned the word Nickle around this time and we started ukulele class with Nathan.

We were out walking the other day and Nick opened the garage and James started saying, "Mom! Nick! Nick door up!" Luckily we were out of earshot and the door closed by the time we got there. But I couldn't help but wonder, wouldn't it be weird if his name was Nick?
