James is talking up a storm. There's a new word everyday - sometimes more. I feel like sentences are just around the corner. We get a lot of phrases now and mini-sentences too. And, not to sound like "that Mom" but it's just so cute to hear this little guy speak you know? And sometimes the most normal everyday sayings are the most hilarious to hear out of a two-year old's mouth. The other day he walked out of his room saying, "yo yo yo." Weird what they pick up. I must have said it to Doug joking around and then boom, there's our son saying it.
I suppose I say 'oh yeah' a lot when I'm on the phone or in conversation. And now thinking about it, Doug says, "Oh yeah buddy?" a lot too. When James pretends to be on the phone or participates in conversations Doug and I have, he just blurts out, "oh yeah." Like he's in complete and total agreement. What's funny though is our little guy is a bit of a mid-westerner. When he says "oh yeah" it sounds like "oh yah" and reminds me of Marge Gunderson from Fargo :)
It'll be interesting to see what kind of accent James will have. It never occurred to me that he'd have an accent different from mine or from Doug. I grew up in a lot of different places and was around a lot of different accents so it's parlor-trickish, but fun to make Doug laugh with the different accents. We were watching "How the States got their Shapes" accent episode late the other night and it was so interesting. Brian Unger would interview people from different parts and ask them what they call certain things so you got to hear differences with y'all, you all, you guys, yous guys, etc; pop, soda, coke, etc; tennis shoes, sneakers, running shoes. It was actually pretty cool. Turns out I may be getting the 'northern cities accent' a little - there was very little difference in the way I said, "cot" and "caught" ... yikes.
The show made an interesting point: Your accent is more the result of your friends than it is your parents and family. From growing up in Chicago, James may have a super fan accent.
Da Bears, Da Bears, Da Bears :)

Oh yeah, da bears! Cheers to Ditka! ;) I PRAY...I PRAY that C doesn't have a Miami Accent...I HATE (i know its a strong word) Miami accents. OMG!
ReplyDeleteMeg, how I love your posts! They are always about something we have also thought about! I've noticed some strong Southern accent coming out in the girls...and it is funny because I don't really think Travis and I have all that *much* of one (me being born in Naperville, IL (bet you didn't know that!) and moving around some and Trav living in Arizona/Colorado for a lot of his childhood)... so it is really funny to hear! We definitely do say "y'all", though! Camille has recently been dragging the word "milk" out into like 3 syllables! :) I can just imagine James with his little Midwest accent :)
ReplyDeleteA midwest accent -- oh dear! Actually, I think it's such a friendly accent to have. I loved this post for so many reasons, and not in the least because it reminded me of something kind of unrelated. The other day I was telling someone your "Bath-skins Robinsons" story and making myself laugh pretty hard. Love it.
ReplyDeleteFor now, though, Go Bears! Right?
