Each child in James' class gets to celebrate his or her birthday with the class. In the days preceding the celebration, each child is asked to bring in photographs from each year of his/her life beginning with birth (so James had 5 photos). The teachers hang the photos up and the other children in the class can ask the birthday boy or girl about the photos etc. It's really a cute idea.
So, we brought James' favorite cupcakes to class - Sweet Mandy B's in all the colors of vanilla frosting. Of course the girls all wanted pink or purple and the boys wanted the orange and blue and green. The teachers said, 'you get what you get and you don't get upset'. It actually helped calm any fussy cupcake receivers.
Before cupcakes, James was able to pick four friends (he picked the four girls he's in love with obviously) to help him sing his birthday song. The birthday child walks around in a circle four times (or how old they are) around the circle holding a globe signifying the rotations of the Earth while the rest of the class sings a song about the years passing.
Then James picked another friend (this time a boy) to help hand out the napkins and plates. James poured everyone's water himself instead of choosing a friend to do it. Then after they all received their cupcakes, everyone sang happy birthday. It was really really nice. I won't lie - I teared up.
There was a funny part of the time there though - everyone kept asking to see James' sister. I kept saying no, James has a baby brother not a sister and the kids told me that James told the class he had a baby sister. He really wanted Cillian to be a girl so I guess he told his class Cillian was a girl. Some of James' classmates came over to be with Cillian. Here's an adorable shot I got.
The 4 girls he's in love with...this cracks me up! Hilarious also that he told the class Cillian was a baby girl :)
