A child in James' class starting wearing an adorable Santa hat to school. James mentioned it to me and then quietly asked if he could have one too. I said sure and then kind of forgot about it ... kind of didn't forget. It was one of those things that always popped into my head at the end of my day getting ready for bed and there it would be - the Santa hat. The $5 item that I just can't remember to pick up for James.
Doug had off today and we took Cillian to the mall and even looked there. Nothing. Then I started getting nervous. What if all the Santa hats were gone. What if everywhere was sold out. It was nearly Christmas. Only a few days left. Doug stayed home while C napped and I got James from school - it was the last day before break.
On the way home, I thought of the drug stores and off we went to CVS. They had no more regular plain Santa hats and the girl thought she had one more left but couldn't find it. Then I found it. On one side it said "Naughty" and then other side it said "Nice" - James wasn't so sure about it at first but then once he realized that was it, he took it gladly.
And he was so happy about it. Sometimes I think you can forget how something so small, something so little could mean so much to a child. You should have seen his face at the grocery store when everyone was noticing him and smiling and saying, "Are you nice or naughty?" He loved it. I don't think anything could have removed the smile from his face. On the way home he was so thankful it just warmed my heart.
Here's my big guy. Love. Love. Love.
