The Theater

Now, this post should come with a disclaimer. I don't know who was more excited about going to the theater - me or James. Ok just kidding, it was totally me. I was SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This post has some background. Ok a lot of background. Get comfy.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away .... I was in theater. *Theater Nerd* Loved it. Still love it. But I was in plays. I loved every minute of every rehearsal and every show. I miss it. I chickened out and never pursued it. But it's okay because I can still enjoy it. When I met Doug, one of the things we had in common was that we both went to see shows as kids. I think I begged and pleaded ahem, I mean politely asked my parents to take me to shows and they so happily obliged. We lived in wonderful Washington D.C. for a huge part of my youth and we got to see the most amazing performances and shows. We even would go for my birthday each year. And in New York when we'd visit back home, we'd go see shows and my Nana would take us to Radio City to see the Rockettes. Doug's Mom used to take them to shows growing up as well and when I moved here, this was still a tradition that I was able to take part in as well and I so joyfully enjoyed.

When Gran was here to visit, I told her that James has been enjoying school and really liking his theater special which was making me so proud. She said, "Well, you should see a show." And I said, yes, I know that we'd love to and then I started to list out all the reasons we can't and then she said, "Why not the Grinch? I'll get tickets." I was so excited I didn't think of anything to say except, "Really?! Wow! Yes! Thank you!"

And that's the story behind these two beaming faces.

I cannot tell you the last time James and I spent the whole day together. We left right after lunch and decided to stay in the city after the show and go out for dinner just me and him. The show was great and he got it - he loved it. He got theater. He didn't ask me, "Why was that man dressed as a dog? or Why did they pretend that or this?" Instead, he smiled and said, "The man who was the dog was so good! It was so cool how they did the sled on the hill! I think we should do a play at our house!" I was so proud and excited I thought I was going to burst. But I kept it calm and said, "James, I am so glad you enjoyed it." When we got in the car after the show, the first thing we did was call Gran to thank her for giving us such a wonderful gift.

It was awesome. I think the photos speak for themselves.

And then in the city, of course there was this. A fire hydrant with frozen water coming out of it. James wanted to touch it. I obliged. And then I purelled his hand to an obnoxious extent.

And the star of the night - my son, James. Carrying our left overs home to Dad.
