The Polar Vortex

Yeah. You may have heard about this. According to someone with whom Doug works, who reads the Farmer's Almanac, we're going to be in a two week cycle of Polar Vortexes (Vortexi?) this winter. Jealous? Oh yeah. I mean, I never in my life even considered that I would experience temperatures like this. EVER. Negative 50 degrees? I hear it's actually warmer in the North Pole. Seriously? Yes. It is warmer in the North Pole than in Chicago. Here is a still from our weather forecast on Sunday night's news.

So the polar vortex hit today: Monday January 6, 2014. James' school was canceled but Doug had work. People were advised to not go outside if it was not necessary. Doug wore snow pants, a face mask, hat, gloves, two jackets and snow boots and changed at work and then changed back into his survival gear before heading home. We survived it. We made it. Here are the photos to prove it.

This was the temp Sunday evening

And then by 7am on Monday - we were already at -12 but it felt like -45

Here's how the day started

And then at 2pm

 "It's HOW cold?!?!?!?!"

And this is how James and I were handling it

And Cillian was hiding in the train

And this is what our windows looked like on the top floor

This was one of our sky-lights - how creepy is this - we're totally frozen in and covered in snow.

Then Doug came home and thought it would be a remarkable idea for all of us to experience outside to watch him throw water into the air so we could watch it freeze before our very eyes.

It was actually really, really cool

Something tells me this winter is going to be one for the books.
